FINE ART
mima’s fine art collection is made up of more than 1500 works drawn together from the former Middlesbrough Art Gallery and Cleveland Gallery.

The collection includes an impressive number of works representing modernism in Britain by artists including Walter Sickert, Duncan Grant, Vanessa Bell, Henri Gaudier-Brzeska, Eric Gill, Stanley Spencer, David Bomberg, Frank Auerbach, Victor Passmore, Bridget Riley etc

A small group of 20th century British sculptures embraces several important pieces.

There is also a noteable collection of 20th and 21st century drawing acquired through Cleveland International Drawing Biennale and the Contemporary Arts Society Special Collection Scheme.

mima is one of only 15 museums in the UK selected by the Contemporary Arts Society to participate in the Special Collection Scheme funded by the National Lottery. This has enabled mima to acquire work by some of the noteable and internationally recognised artists of the present day including: Tracy Emin, Jeremy Deller, Gavin Turk, George Shaw, David Shrigley, Fiona Banner, Paul Noble, Ceal Floyer, Bob & Roberta Smith, Tomoko Takahashi and Richard Wright.

The Contemporary Art Society exists to promote the collecting of contemporary art through gifts to public museums and through advice and guidance to individuals. The Special Collection Scheme is funded through the Arts Council National Lottery.
