COMMISSIONS
mima has commissioned a number of internationally renowned artists to contribute to the building including Takeshi Yasuda, Gijs Bakker, Michael Rowe, Andrew Miller and Richard Wright.
Takeshi Yasuda has been commissioned to produce a range of tableware. The commission was inspired by the two collections of ceramics held in Middlesbrough; the Linthorpe Pottery Collection inspired by Christopher Dresser and the important collection of Studio Ceramics.
Combining elements of the two collections, the result is a useable, affordable range of ceramics overseen by a major artist recognised as a key figure within contemporary ceramics.
The development of the commission will be represented through acquisitions to mima's ceramics collection including examples from the prototype to production stages. The work will also be available through mima's shop.
Prolific Dutch designer Gijs Bakker has worked in areas ranging from jewellery to architecture throughout his exceptional career. mima’s jewellery collection holds two key early works along with a newly acquired example of the artist’s work.
Creating a link between the collections and the architecture Bakker has designed the cafe interior and furnishings.
Working with lines of metal and fibre optic light Michael Rowe has developed a commission that relates to spatial qualities of the architecture. This commission represents a departure from his vessel forms yet reflects the purity implicit within the artist’s work.
The mima shop is also an artwork by Andrew Miller. His work blurs the boundaries between utilitarian design and fine art.
mima is proud to be the first gallery to host a permanently sited Richard Wright drawing, produced entirely in gold leaf and sited above the main staircase in mima’s entrance hall.
I Love it in Space…a wall drawing by Graham Gussin is permanently sited in the event space. The work was purchased through the Contemporary Art Society Special Collection Scheme. [please note the event space may be occasionally closed to the public.
